Syracuse University’s School of Architecture has an extremely close-knit alumni network thanks to Director of Career Services Connie Caldwell. As an employee at Syracuse Architecture since 1995, Connie is well-known amongst students and alumni as a huge asset to the program. She coaches students on interview skills and helps firms on selection of talent. She does such a great job in this role, she’s been sought out to train employees in similar roles at other universities and was recently honored as one of the 30 Most Admired Educators for 2013 by DesignIntelligence.

When Syracuse Architecture graduates / TPG Architecture employees Project Architect, Allison Stadnyck, RA, LEED AP, and Project Designer, Elana Tenenbaum, LEED GA, received an email from Connie asking alumni to visit the school to interview potential candidates, they jumped at the opportunity.

During their time as Syracuse Architecture students, both Allison and Elana interviewed with firms from New York City during the school’s annual Spring hiring period. Elana even landed her first design internship at a NYC-based firm from one of her interviews.

After agreeing to participate, Allison and Elana were booked for a visit on Tuesday, February 26th and Wednesday, February 27th. Before their visit, they had the opportunity to review resumes and portfolios to select which students they wanted to meet.

When Allison and Elana arrived at Syracuse on Tuesday morning, the first met with Connie to catch up and discuss the students they were about to meet. There also had the chance to tour the new School of Architecture, which had undergone extensive renovations since they graduated with their B.Arch degrees in ’03 and ’08 respectively.

Over the next day and a half, Allison and Elana interviewed 22 students, including those in their Thesis year seeking full-time jobs and students seeking summer internships. During each 40 minute interview, students had the chance to show their work and also ask questions about TPG projects and firm culture. For many of the students, it was their first interview ever or at least their first exposure to a New York City firm.

Students who did not have the chance to interview had the opportunity to attend a one-hour Q&A session with Allison and Elana on Tuesday night in Slocum Hall. Students were provided with a TPG info sheet and could view a slideshow of TPG projects.

Overall, Allison and Elana were thoroughly impressed by the articulate and well-prepared students who were well-versed in TPG projects as well as the latest news from TPG’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Since their visit, Allison and Elana have received many handmade thank you notes, each more impressive than the next. They have narrowed the candidate list down to their top picks and TPG is in the process of inviting students to interview with its hiring committee. Thank you to Syracuse Architecture and Connie for giving us this opportunity to meet such great candidates. We’ll be back next year!
